The current model of the Scirocco has been around for quite some time so it would only be natural for VW to try and improve it until a new model is released. Not too long ago they finally did something about this and released the 2016 Volkswagen Scirocco GTS and while the name doesn’t sound like much for a VW, the car actually has the same name as the car released back in the 1980s and it is meant to be a lightweight version of the 2 liter model. In fact, the GTS name puts it a lot closer to the Golf GTI more than anything else which is actually a very good thing because the GTI is one of the better cars to drive out there.
2016 Volkswagen Scirocco GTS Price And Release Date
There is still no official information about when the car is going to be released with this package but it is likely going to be available in the next couple of months. The price is unknown but it should cost just a hair over the current 2 liter model, so expect around the equivalent of $35,000 which is no cheap but still cheaper than the R model. Unfortunately VW is not going to make it available in the US which is a shame but the car would cost just too much with the added import costs, making it in the base trim level even more expensive than a Golf R.
Under the body of the 2016 VW Scirocco GTS there hasn’t been as much work as we would like. In fact, the car is said to use the exact same suspension system and chassis tuning as the 2 liter version which also means that it will be a bit too harsh as well as not that comfortable as the GTI.
2016 Volkswagen Scirocco GTS Engine
Engine wise, it features the same 217 horsepower and roughly 210 lb-ft of torque from a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 unit. The fuel consumption has been improved from the previous model so on the EU cycle it can provide up to 49 MPG which is quite impressive for a car with this performance. It can get to 60 MPH in under 6.5 seconds and it can reach a maximum top speed of 153 MPH which is not slow by any standards. There are also two transmissions available, a 6 speed manual as well as a 6 speed DSG unit, both offering similar performance but the DSG is the better one thanks to the fact that it offers almost instant gear changing. The only drawback here is that the car only comes with front wheel drive and even though it has a limited slip differential, it just doesn’t drive as good as the GTI.
Exterior And Interior Changes
Most of the changes on the 2016 Volkswagen Scirocco GTS have been made on the exterior, making the car stand out even more than before. There are now 6 different colors available and one new design pack which adds two stripes similar to those on the 1980s model. These stripes are black with the red exterior and red with all the other 5 colors in order to stand out as much as possible. On top of that, the GTS is equipped with the same body-kit as the R model and it comes with 18 inch standard alloys with the possibility of getting 19 inch wheels. The interior hasn’t been left untouched either so it now has a new black cloth and leather seats with red stitching as well as a red stripe on each seat, leather wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, piano-black accents on the dashboard as well as a chrome package for the buttons on the doors and on the door-handles.
